A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
