The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
